Meet Our Flock
From Brooder Box…
Our Cornish Cross chickens start their life as chicks living in a brooder box. Baby chicks are very delicate and need to be closely monitored and kept very warm. Our brooder box is kept at our house so we can easily check on them throughout the day. As the chicks get older they will gradually lose their fluffy feathers and start to grow their adult feathers. When they are three weeks old and their feathers have grown in they are officially ready to move out to pasture!
To Pasture…
Moving day is the best day for our chickens. Fresh grass, bugs, and plenty of room to run makes for a lot of fun. Our chickens stay on pasture for the remainder of their life and are moved to a fresh plot of grass daily. Chickens are omnivores and ours enjoy a diverse diet of grass, bugs and seeds that they forage on pasture in addition to a high quality non-GMO chicken feed that we provide. This diverse diet meets all of their nutritional needs and helps to grow a nutrient dense meat for you!
And Only One Bad Day…
As much as we love our chickens, we know the purpose for why we raise them. We value their life and the purpose they serve in providing our family nutrients and the opportunity to come together over the dinner table. Because of this, we take the responsibility of butchering them very seriously and each butchering day is started with a prayer of gratitude for their life. Butchering our chickens is done in our backyard by our family with the most humane practices. We take great care to ensure the birds are stress free beforehand, and any pain lasts only a split second. Butchering our chickens is a time consuming and labor intensive process, but it is something we feel passionate about doing the right way. We have a responsibility to be a steward over our birds from birth to death and we take it seriously. In house butchering also ensures we can have full control of sanitation practices and ensure the safety of our meat. Although it is the least pleasant part of raising chickens, we believe it is important for people to know what it takes to put food on their table and we are proud of the practices and standards we maintain.
